Gorey Celtic 1 - 0 Tombrack
Another Friday night cup tie up at Mullaunfin. Certainly a different atmosphere, and more importantly the squad is responding with little or no cry offs, which is really encouraging.
A close tight encounter, in which Tombrack were a credit to their club, and look to be a team on the move.
A penalty after 25 minutes, which was dispatched with aplomb from Danny Reilly proved to be the difference between the teams.
The 1st half saw Celtic have the better of things, always trying to get the ball down and play, with a little luck and better finishing we could have seen a few more goals.
Tombrack were playing a 4-5-1 formation, and at times had us outnumbered in midfield, we adjusted by asking Terry Carey to drop from his wide position into the centre of the park when wewere defending.
The lead came when a inviting cross into the box from Terry Carey was handled by a Tombrack defender. Referee Micheal Franklin having no hesitation in awarding the penalty. Tombracks best effort over the ninety minutes came on 35 minutes, Sam Griffith producing a top quality save from a rasping 18 yard shot.
H.T. 1-0
The 2nd half saw Celtic lose a little of their attacking play, with Tombrack taking over in the poccession stakes, but causing the very well organised Celtic back four and midfield few scares.
Celtic looked dangerous on the break, with David O Brien and Terry Carey coming close.
In the 92nd minute, Tombrack were awarded a corner, they pushed the entire team including their goalkeeper into our penalty box, the resultant corner was cleared, leaving David O Brien free to walk the ball into an empty net, referee Franklin blew for full time, stopping us taking a 2-0 lead.
Into round three, 4 wins on the trot and a bit of momentum.
We have played better this season and lost. I thought that the back four were excellent tonight, restricting Tombrack to very little.
