Gorey Celtic 1 - 2 Ajax Athelic
The 3rd team kicked off their Division 4A League campaign on Sunday last in extremely Difficult conditions at Mullaunfin.
We started quite well with the returning Joe Roche bedding in well with young Colm Stafford in the middle of the park. Failure to close the edge of the box quickly enough led to Ajax making the breakthrough on twenty minutes. For me it was all Celtic for the next hour, but we were not exactly carving out any clear cut chances.
The sight of lads wringing out shirts at half time was a unique one indeed and I honestly cant remember worse conditions. But it was the same for both teams and fair play to both teams who kept going through the deluge. Having played our hearts out we were somewhat out on our feet towards the end and Ajax, who had a few tidy players on show, hit us for two late goals.
Chris Cullen, who is captain this year to coincide with his 40th Birthday, scored a late consolation which is the least we deserved. We will take the positives out of the
performance and move on.
Training is flying so its up to the lads to get up and make the best of the season ahead.
Strong performances on the day from Brian Leonard, Graham Geraghty, Joe Roche and Clyde Phayres
