Gorey Celtic 4 - 0 Corach Ramblers
This was the C teams first appearance in three weeks and the favourable weather provided the perfect backdrop to re-establish their recent league form which saw two wins on the trot.
This fixture had a different feel to it with a big feature being the absence of the ever influential and calming player/manager Brian Maher, luckily the squad was bolstered by the arrival of a mix of youth and experience on the day.
We were forced into an early substitution with Tony Browne being replaced by Shane Roche before the ten minute mark at left back.
This really was a game of two halves. The first period was a tight enough affair with the best of the few chances falling to Celtic most notable were chances for Richie Quinn when through some nice interplay found himself one on one with the keeper only to shoot wide and Terry Carey also hitting the side netting. While passing the ball around nicely Celtic were finding it hard to convert the chances falling their way into a concrete score.
H.T. 0-0
The second half saw Celtics hard work and slick passing turned into a fine win with the first arriving relatively early in the first half when a sideways sweeping move featured Graham Geraghty laying the ball off to Terry Carey who took the ball wide and to the left of the last man and duly dispatched a left footed shot wide and to the keepers right. The Second arrived sometime later and Terry was again involved ,this time dinking in a deft cross which found Dave Gahan who neatly cushioned the ball and slotted past the oncoming keeper. The third soon followed with defence turned into attack in a flash with the hard tackling Ken Byrne providing a sweeping tackle which travelled the length of the pitch allowing the lively Graham Geraghty to pass the ball camly by the keeper.
The scoring was completed by Shane Roche when he put the ball high into the top of the net out of the keepers reach from a free kick just outside the box. It wasn’t all one way traffic with Corach having two good chances the first being saved well by Ciaran Gartland who narrowed the angle superbly and then again a goal-line clearance by Dave Gahan.
Overall it was another good all around display with the back four having a very solid look about them with Dave Gahan’s reading of the game and quick reactions catching the eye, in midfield the delicate passing and vision of Brian Leonard were on full display.
Everyone worked hard and encouraged each other throughout with special thanks to the experience campaigners Ken, Terry, Dave and Shane fitting in seamlessly and also the shining stars of the future Ciaran, Jay and especially Luka who turned up with very little notice to turn in a dogged and composed performance.
