Gorey Celtic 4 - 1 St Josephs
Celtic opened their account for the new 2010-11 season with an emphatic 4-1 home victory over St. Josephs of Kilmuckridge.
With Sean Feeney, Prmelek Sorobolski and Shane Roche making their competitive 1st team debuts, the starting Celtic 11 had a fresh look about them.
Celtic were fast out of the blocks, taking the game to St. Josephs, the opening exchanges saw Celtic dominate proceedings, their reward came after 15 minutes, attacking full back Paul Timmins finding time and space to fire home from 10 yards. His first senior goal for the Club.
St. Josephs gradually clawed their way back into the game, adopting a physical approach, the game became very stop start with numerous free kicks and delays for injuries.
On 30 minutes St. Josephs equalised, a corner into the 6 yard box was meet with a firm headed effort, that hit a post before entering the net.
This goal seemed to give Celtic a wake up call, they started to play at a faster tempo, Shane Roche with his first two goal for the club on 35 and 41 mins gave Celtic a healthy
3-1 half time advantage.
With centre back Sean Feeney having to be replaced at the half time break, suffering from double vision, Celtic had to re-jig their team, Wes Fitzpatrick occupying
the centre back birth, with Terry Carey coming into the fray alonside David O'Brien in attack.
Terry Carey increased Celtics lead on 55 minutes with a good headed effort from 8 yards, Celtic were content to soak up pressure in the 2nd period, whilst always looking dangerous on the break with the pace of Carey and OBrien up front .
Overall a very pleasing start to the season, there seems to be a great work ethic to the squad, our first serious question was asked on 30 minutes when St.Josephs equalised, we showed great quality in responding to this setback and upping our performance.
A special mention has to go to John Kavanagh, at 17 years of age he put in a mature performance alongside Danny Reilly in the centre of midfield.
Hopefully we can use this victory as a base for a successful season.
We are away to last season Division 2A champions, Stoney Rovers at 2 pm Sunday.
Stoney had a very good away win in Enniscorthy United and are sure to be fired up for our visit.
A difficult but not impossble task await us next Sunday.
Team: Big Jack, Paul Timmons, Sean Feeney, Dave Gahan, Prmelek Sorobolski, Craig Connor, John Kavanagh, Danny Reilly, Shane Roche, Wes Fitzpatrick, David O'Brien.
Subs: Terry Carey for Feeney (half-time), Barry Glencross for Roche (60 mins), Phelim Gallagher.
