Gorey Celtic 2 - 1 Corach Ramblers
Celtic got their 1st win of the season, with a hard fought win over Corach Ramblers. In a game played in very hot conditions on Sunday morning.
The Celtic management had asked the squad for an honest, hardworking performance, certain problems with their opening two games of the season were answered with a performance of commitment and effort that saw them claim the 3 points.
Celtic opened brightly, if somewhat over anxious, our passing being erratic and giving away free kicks for over eager tackling, as the game progressed Celtic settled into their stride, taking the game to Corach. Celtic were awarded a penalty on 20 minutes, Wes Fitzpatrick firing home, after a blatant push on David O'Brien in the 6 yard box. The breakthrough seemed to ignite Celtic. A fabulous 60 yard run from Ger Carey setup David O Brien, his shot from 6 yards being brilliantly saved by the Corach Keeper. Celtics 2nd came on 35 minutes, new signing William Doyle opening his account with the club, with a fine solo effort, beating 2 defenders before firing pass the keeper.
At this stage Celtic were rampant and it looked only a matter of time before their lead would be increased. Chances were created and missed, Celtic had to settle for a half-time lead of 2-0.
H.T.: 2-0
In the opening 20 minutes for the 2nd half, Celtic hit the crossbar and upright in an effort to kill of the game, with the 3rd goal not coming, Celtic were always vunerable
to a sucker punch, this came on 70 minutes, when a Corach Forward headed home from 6 yards following as corner.
In football goals change games, in the space of 2 minutes
Celtic went from being in total control to a team looking nervy, giving the ball away cheaply and inviting pressure onto themselves.
Whilst big Jack was never forced to make any saves, several free kicks on the edge of the penalty area caused the Celtic defence a few nervous moments.
A win is a win. An ugly win will do. We have played better, but we witnessed all players involved yesterday giving everything, if the chances we created had been converted
we would have runout easy winners.
This win kick starts the season, what is obvious after 3 games is that with the exception of St Cormacs, all teams have dropped points our return of 4 points sees us in joint 3rd place in the league!!!!
